Bird Box Camera Troubleshooting: Offline, Wi-Fi, Password & Recording Problems

If your bird box camera has stopped working, identify whether the problem is power, Wi-Fi, internet access, the app, the camera password, the picture or the recording storage before doing anything destructive — most faults do not need an immediate factory reset.

Updated September 2026 · Zopkins Technical Team

If your bird box camera has stopped working, the first job is to identify whether the problem is power, Wi-Fi, internet access, the app, the camera password, the picture or the recording storage.

Most faults do not require an immediate factory reset.

In fact, if a camera was previously working, resetting it or deleting it from the app too early can create extra work without fixing the original problem.

Start with the symptom you actually have. This guide covers:

  • Camera showing offline
  • Camera not reconnecting
  • Wi-Fi problems
  • New router or password problems
  • ‘Wrong Password’ errors
  • App/account confusion
  • No picture
  • Black-and-white picture
  • Night vision
  • Blurry/washed-out image
  • SD-card recording problems
  • Remote viewing problems
  • When a factory reset really is appropriate

If you know which Zopkins camera you have, this guide will also point you to the relevant model-specific instructions.

Zopkins Support

Is the bird box currently occupied?

If birds are actively nesting, avoid opening the box or physically accessing the camera just to investigate a minor fault.

Many faults can be investigated from the app, the router, the power supply, the indoor cable run, the home network or a computer — without touching the box. If OBS stops, the internet goes down, the router reboots, the app reports offline, or recordings disappear, that is not automatically a reason to open the nest box.

The birds take priority over fixing a non-essential camera picture. See when to install a bird box camera and whether bird box cameras disturb birds.

Start here: what changed?

If the camera previously worked, ask what changed immediately before the problem appeared. Common examples:

  • Broadband router replaced
  • Wi-Fi password changed
  • Wi-Fi network name changed
  • Router restarted
  • Power disconnected
  • Extension cable moved
  • Power supply changed
  • Phone replaced
  • App reinstalled
  • Camera added to another device
  • SD card changed
  • Internet provider changed
  • Mesh/extender changed

This question often solves the problem much faster than resetting everything.

A camera rarely forgets its Wi-Fi details for no reason. If the problem appeared immediately after changing the router, start with the network configuration.

My bird box camera says Offline

If a camera that previously worked suddenly shows Offline, check power and network connectivity before changing its configuration.

  • Confirm the camera has power.
  • Confirm the router is powered and running.
  • Check whether other devices can use the same network.
  • Think about any recent router/Wi-Fi changes.
  • Restart the relevant equipment where appropriate.
  • Allow the camera time to reconnect.
  • Check whether it is visible locally.
  • Only then move into model-specific troubleshooting.

For the BBCAM221PRO, the dedicated support article walks through this in the correct order:

BBCAM221PRO – Wi-Fi Camera Appears Offline

Power checks

Before anything else: check power

An offline camera may simply not be powered. Check the accessible parts of the installation first:

  • PSU plugged in
  • Socket switched on
  • Extension cable connected
  • No obviously loose plugs
  • No damaged cable
  • No water or corrosion around accessible connections

We can't claim every connector is fully waterproof — see the existing guide on this for what's actually protected:

Are The Connections And Cables Waterproof?

If the bird box is occupied and the internal connection or camera can't be reached without disturbing the nest, don't open it merely to investigate a non-essential fault.

Power cycle vs factory reset

These are not the same thing, and it's worth being clear on the difference before doing either.

What it doesRemoves configuration?
Power cycleTurn the camera off, wait briefly, turn it back onNo, not intentionally
Factory resetReturns the camera to its initial/default configurationYes — may remove Wi-Fi details, camera password/configuration and other settings, depending on the model

A reboot/power cycle and a factory reset are not the same thing. For a previously working camera, a normal restart is a far less destructive first step.

We haven't given a specific reset-button duration here deliberately — see the model-specific reset guide for the exact procedure and timing for your camera.

How long should I wait after restarting?

IP cameras can take a little while to boot, connect to Wi-Fi, obtain an IP address, reconnect to services, and then appear online in the app. Don't repeatedly power-cycle it every few seconds — give it a reasonable opportunity to restart fully. The BBCAM221PRO's own offline guide gives a specific recommended wait time at each step; follow that where you're troubleshooting that model specifically.

Wi-Fi problems: coverage and reconnecting

If the camera works near the router but becomes unreliable in its final garden location, the problem is very likely Wi-Fi coverage rather than the camera itself.

Symptoms include:

  • Intermittent offline status
  • Delayed live view
  • Frozen picture
  • Repeated reconnects
  • Works indoors but not outside
How to Extend Wi-Fi Range Into Your Garden

Don't judge Wi-Fi solely by internet speed

Fast broadband does not guarantee good garden Wi-Fi. A customer can have very fast broadband but still get a poor signal through brick, foil-backed insulation, walls, glazing, distance or interference. Equally, a camera doesn't need huge internet bandwidth simply to maintain a stable local connection — coverage and stability are the issue, not headline broadband speed.

Does a Bird Box Camera Need Wi-Fi or Internet?

New router or Wi-Fi password changed

The most likely explanation is that the camera still knows the old Wi-Fi network details.

Changing the router, the SSID/network name, or the Wi-Fi password means existing Wi-Fi devices — including the camera — may no longer be able to join automatically.

The BBCAM202 has a dedicated guide for this exact situation:

BBCAM202 – How To Change Wi-Fi Details

For the BBCAM221PRO, follow the same principle — the camera needs the new network's name and password before it can reconnect. If a dedicated CamHi network-change walkthrough isn't what you need, the offline and factory-reset guides below cover the recovery path.

A useful trick when replacing a router

If a replacement router uses exactly the same Wi-Fi name (SSID), password and compatible security settings as the old one, many already-configured devices — including the camera — can reconnect without being reconfigured at all. This is the first option in the BBCAM202 Wi-Fi guide above, and it's worth trying even after other troubleshooting, provided your router's security/band settings support it.

This is most useful as a preventative step when you're about to change routers — it's not the primary fix if you've already changed everything on the new router.

Wi-Fi vs internet: diagnose the right failure

Wi-Fi and internet access are not the same thing.

It's entirely possible for the camera's connection to the router to keep working locally while the router's own connection to the internet has failed. For the current Zopkins cameras: the BBCAM221PRO can operate over local Wi-Fi without active internet, and the BBCAM202, once configured, can also continue operating over local Wi-Fi without active internet.

So if local viewing works but remote viewing doesn't, don't reset the camera — investigate the home internet connection, the remote phone's own internet connection, and the remote-access path instead.

Does a Bird Box Camera Need Wi-Fi or Internet?

Camera works at home but not when I'm away

This strongly suggests the camera and local network are working, and the problem relates to remote internet access. If the camera works over home Wi-Fi but not over mobile data away from home, start by checking the home broadband, the app's remote-access status, and the phone's own mobile-data connection — not by moving the camera, changing focus, resetting the SD card, or opening the bird box.

BBCAM221PRO says Wrong Password

A ‘Wrong Password’ message does not necessarily mean your app-account password is wrong.

There are several different credentials involved, and they aren't interchangeable: the app/account login, the camera/device password, the Wi-Fi password, and the router/admin password.

For the BBCAM221PRO specifically, the message refers to the camera's own device password (used by the CamHi app to authenticate with the camera itself) rather than simply your CamHi account login — see the dedicated guide, which is the authority on the exact recovery steps:

BBCAM221PRO – 'Wrong Password' Error

If the camera still works on another phone or device, don't immediately factory-reset it. The working device may still contain or access the correct camera configuration, which gives a much easier recovery route than resetting.

I forgot my camera password

If another device still has working access, preserve that working access while you investigate — don't remove the camera from the working device, delete the app, or reset the camera unless you need to. A reset should normally be the recovery path after less destructive options have failed.

  • BBCAM221PRO: see the Wrong Password guide above, then the factory reset guide if recovery isn't possible.
  • BBCAM202: uses the Tapo app, which has its own account-recovery flow separate from the camera's Wi-Fi configuration — don't conflate a Tapo account password with the camera's Wi-Fi or device credentials.
BBCAM221PRO – How To Factory Reset (CamHi App)

I forgot my Wi-Fi password

Your home's Wi-Fi password is controlled by your router or network, not by the bird box camera. Changing it at the router will disconnect the camera until it's given the new password. Don't factory-reset the camera merely to discover your router's Wi-Fi password — that information lives on the router, or with whoever set it up, or your ISP.

App password vs camera password vs Wi-Fi password vs router admin password

CredentialWhat it's for
App/account passwordSigns you into the app/account, where applicable
Camera/device passwordAuthenticates access to the camera itself, where applicable
Wi-Fi passwordLets the camera join your wireless network
Router admin passwordGives access to your router's own configuration

These four passwords are not interchangeable.

App and account problems

My app can't find the camera — first work out whether the camera was already configured before, or whether this is first-time setup. These are different problems.

  • First-time setup: use the model-specific setup instructions for your camera.
  • Previously working camera: don't immediately begin the initial setup again — check power, the router, any recent network changes, whether the camera appears on another device, and whether it's reachable locally, then use the relevant offline guide.
BBCAM202 – Initial Setup Instructions

My camera worked until I changed something in the app — if the problem began immediately after changing a setting, reverse or check that setting before resetting the entire camera. Common areas: night mode, Wi-Fi/network, recording, password, or stream/profile settings. Only settings that actually exist on your model apply, of course.

My camera shows no picture

Break this down into two different situations before assuming the worst:

  • Camera shown as offline: this is a network/power issue — see the Camera offline section above.
  • Camera shown online but the video area is black: this could be a stream/app problem, the camera being obscured, a night-vision configuration issue, or a network stream issue — don't immediately assume a camera hardware fault.

If the camera is inside an occupied nest box, try every remote/app/network diagnostic first, before considering physical access.

Night vision and black-and-white picture

A black-and-white image is usually normal when the camera is operating in infrared night mode — a bird box can be dark enough for night mode even during daytime. This is not necessarily a fault.

Bird Box Camera Night Vision Explained

If night vision genuinely isn't working — the image is completely black, IR isn't activating, the camera seems stuck in another mode, night mode has been manually disabled, or the image is washed out rather than actually dark — first work out whether the camera is failing to illuminate the box at all, or whether IR reflection is making an otherwise-working image unusable (see the next section). The model-specific night-vision guides cover the exact settings:

  • BBCAM202 – Night Vision Settings
  • BBCAM221PRO – Night Vision Settings
BBCAM202 – Night Vision SettingsBBCAM221PRO – Night Vision Settings

Blurry or washed-out image

Picture is white or washed out at night

This is often infrared reflection rather than an exposure or network fault. Possible sources include a nearby wall, bracket, cable, a pale surface, a spider web, condensation, or a reflective fixing.

Bird Box Camera Night Vision ExplainedWhere Should a Camera Be Positioned Inside a Bird Box?

If active nesting has started, don't open the box merely to improve a slightly imperfect picture.

Picture is blurry

Possible causes include focus, the camera being too close to the nest, condensation, a dirty lens, IR reflection, network/compression, or motion blur. The BBCAM221PRO has adjustable focus; we haven't verified that for the BBCAM202, so don't assume it applies there too.

Where Should a Camera Be Positioned Inside a Bird Box?

Picture keeps freezing

Work out whether it's local or remote-only, because the likely cause is different:

  • Local (freezes even viewing on the home network): possibly weak Wi-Fi, network instability, or a power issue.
  • Remote only (fine locally, freezes remotely): possibly broadband upload, internet, or the remote mobile connection.

If it works perfectly beside the router but not outside, Wi-Fi coverage becomes highly likely — see the Wi-Fi problems section above. Don't immediately conclude the camera itself has failed.

Recording and SD card problems

A working live picture does not prove the microSD recording system is working — they're separate functions. Check whether the SD card is recognised, recording is enabled, the recording mode is correct, and whether there are any storage errors, then do an actual test recording and playback.

Bird Box Camera Recording & SD Card Guide

The BBCAM221PRO's own guide covers viewing and saving footage in the CamHi app in detail:

BBCAM221PRO – How To View And Save Footage (CamHi App)

SD card not recognised

Possible causes include how the card is seated, an unsupported capacity, card format, corruption, or a card fault. See the recording guide above rather than trying to fix this by trial and error — and don't open an occupied bird box just to swap storage unless it's genuinely necessary.

Recording disappeared or an old clip is missing

If loop/overwrite behaviour applies to your card and settings, older footage may simply have been recorded over as the card filled. Save memorable clips to your phone or another device when you find them, rather than treating the camera's SD card as permanent archive storage.

Current Zopkins cameras include an 8GB card as standard and don't require a paid cloud-storage subscription for normal local recording.

No motion alerts

Treat this separately from recording. Possible causes include motion detection being disabled, notification permissions, app background restrictions, no internet connection, or alert-sensitivity settings. A camera can potentially continue working and recording even if phone push notifications aren't arriving — so “no notification” does not necessarily mean “camera offline.” Check the model-specific instructions for your camera's exact motion settings.

Other issues

Camera time/date is wrong

Check the camera's timezone and sync/time settings in the app. Incorrect timestamps can make finding recordings much harder. If a dedicated guide exists for your model, use that for the exact menu path rather than guessing.

Audio isn't working

First work out exactly what's missing: no live audio, no recorded audio, no two-way audio, a muted/low phone volume, or an app permissions issue. Not every model supports a speaker, two-way talk, or recorded audio, so check what your specific camera actually offers before assuming a fault.

The BBCAM202's own support material confirms it plays audio announcements during initial setup — that's a different thing from ongoing two-way audio during normal use:

BBCAM202 – Will The Audio Announcements Scare Birds?

Don't reset an occupied-camera system just to reproduce setup audio.

Multiple phones and new devices

Don't factory-reset a working camera just because you have a new phone.

Both models have their own sharing/add-device workflow:

  • BBCAM202: How To Share With Another User Account
  • BBCAM221PRO: How To Add On Another Device
BBCAM202 – How To Share With Another User AccountBBCAM221PRO – How To Add On Another Device (Wi-Fi Cameras)

This is much safer than starting again unnecessarily.

If another phone, tablet or PC can still access the camera, don't remove that working access while troubleshooting. A functioning device proves the camera has power, is reachable somehow, and that at least one valid configuration exists. It may also let you check settings, retrieve camera details, or use the sharing/add-device process — particularly valuable for password or new-phone problems.

Factory reset

Factory reset is useful when configuration genuinely needs to be rebuilt — but it should usually be a later troubleshooting step, not the first one.

Possible legitimate reasons to reset:

  • Password recovery, when no other supported recovery method exists
  • The camera needs to join a completely new network and the normal change process isn't possible
  • Configuration has become unusable
  • The model-specific Zopkins support instructions direct you to reset as part of a specific fix

Before resetting:

  • Identify the camera model
  • Save the UID/QR code/details if you have them
  • Note current settings where accessible
  • Make sure you know the setup requirements for your model
  • Preserve any working access on other devices until you're ready
  • Understand whether internet is needed for setup
  • Avoid doing this while birds are actively nesting if it requires physical access

Then use the correct model-specific reset guide — we've deliberately not repeated the reset-button steps here:

BBCAM202 – How To Factory ResetBBCAM221PRO – How To Factory Reset (CamHi App)

When should I NOT factory reset?

Don't reset simply because:

  • Broadband temporarily went down
  • The router rebooted
  • The app temporarily shows offline
  • Remote viewing fails but local viewing works
  • Night vision is black and white
  • The SD card isn't recording
  • One phone has forgotten the camera but another still works
  • An OBS/YouTube stream failed

A reset is not a universal cure.

Model identification matters

Don't follow BBCAM202 instructions on a BBCAM221PRO, or vice versa — the two models use different apps, setup processes, capabilities and password behaviour.

If you're not sure which one you have, check your order information, the product label, the camera's appearance, or the relevant product page before troubleshooting.

A ‘before contacting us’ checklist

Before contacting Zopkins, if possible tell us:

  • Camera model
  • Whether it ever worked before
  • When the problem started
  • What changed immediately beforehand
  • The exact error message
  • Whether the camera appears online or offline
  • Whether it works on your home Wi-Fi
  • Whether it works away from home on mobile data
  • Whether another phone or device can still access it
  • Whether your router/internet is otherwise working
  • A screenshot of the error, if possible
  • Which app you're using
  • Whether the box is currently occupied

This will dramatically speed up diagnosis.

Exact error messages matter

Record the precise message where you can. ‘Offline’ is different from ‘Wrong Password’, which is different from ‘Network Error’ or ‘SD card error’. Don't paraphrase an error when contacting support — a screenshot is ideal.

Don't troubleshoot five things at once

Change one thing at a time and test again. Avoid simultaneously resetting the camera, changing router Wi-Fi, reinstalling the app, swapping the SD card and changing the password — do that all at once and it becomes very hard to know what actually solved (or created) the problem.

Most problems are easier to fix when you diagnose before resetting

We support these cameras directly, and one of the most useful troubleshooting habits is to preserve what is already working.

If a camera worked yesterday, the first question normally isn't “How do I factory reset it?” It's “What changed?” That might be power, the router, the Wi-Fi password, the internet, the phone, the app, or a camera setting. A methodical check is usually faster than starting the whole installation again.

Zopkins has supported these cameras through hundreds of real installations, and troubleshooting depends on knowing how the particular camera actually works — a generic “just reset it” answer isn't always the right advice. We maintain model-specific setup guides, reset instructions, Wi-Fi support, password help, recording instructions, night-vision help, and direct support if you get stuck.

Quick answer

My bird box camera is offline — what should I do? If it previously worked, check its power and network connection before resetting or deleting it from the app.

Should I factory reset an offline camera? Not as the first step. A temporary power or network problem is more likely, and a factory reset also removes the camera's configuration.

Why did it stop after a new router? The camera may still hold the old Wi-Fi network name or password and can't join the replacement router until it's told the new details.

Why does my camera work on Wi-Fi but not mobile data? If local viewing works, the camera is likely fine and the problem is more likely the internet/remote-access path.

Why does CamHi say Wrong Password? It may refer to the BBCAM221PRO's own camera/device password rather than your general app login.

Why does the camera live view work but not record? Live streaming and microSD recording are separate functions, so check the card and recording settings independently.

Frequently asked questions
