How to Extend Wi-Fi Range Into Your Garden
Start by moving your router into the open, raising it off the floor, and placing it closer to the side of the house facing the garden. For a small garden, repositioning your router or adding a well-positioned Wi-Fi extender may be enough. For larger gardens, garden offices or multiple outdoor cameras, mesh Wi-Fi, an outdoor access point, Ethernet or a point-to-point wireless link can provide a much more reliable connection.

Is 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz better for garden Wi-Fi?
Most modern routers broadcast on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz (and increasingly 6 GHz) at the same time, and it's worth knowing the difference when you're trying to reach the garden. As a general rule, 2.4 GHz travels further and copes better with walls and other obstructions, while 5 GHz can carry more data but its useful range drops off faster, particularly once a wall or two gets in the way. 6 GHz, where it's available, is shorter-range again.
For an outdoor camera, a stable connection usually matters more than outright speed — a strong and consistent 2.4 GHz link is often more useful for a garden camera than a faster but marginal 5 GHz one. Not every device gives you the choice, but where your camera or extender lets you pick a band, it's worth trying 2.4 GHz first if the connection has been unreliable.
Start with the location of your router
Before buying any extra equipment, look at where your router is placed. A router hidden in a cupboard, sitting on the floor, or tucked behind a television will usually have a harder time reaching the garden.
For the best possible signal, try to place your router:
- Out in the open rather than inside a cupboard
- On a shelf or table instead of on the floor
- Away from radiators, fish tanks, televisions, and other electrical equipment
- Closer to the side of the house that faces the garden, if the cable allows it
You do not have to move it all the way to the back of the house. Even moving it a metre or two, or lifting it onto a shelf, can make a noticeable difference.
Test the signal where you actually need it
Take your phone to the place where you want to use your bird box camera, wildlife camera, or other garden device. Connect your phone to your home Wi-Fi and spend a minute browsing a few websites or playing a video.
If the connection stays reliable, your Wi-Fi may already be good enough. If your phone keeps losing Wi-Fi, becomes very slow, or switches to mobile data, you will probably need to extend the signal.
Why a simple Wi-Fi repeater is not always the best answer
A Wi-Fi repeater, sometimes sold as a booster or range extender, receives the signal from your router and broadcasts it again. They are inexpensive and can work well for a small dead spot, but they have a few drawbacks.
- A repeater cannot improve a signal that is already very weak.
- The extra wireless step can make the connection slower and less responsive.
- Some repeaters create a second Wi-Fi network that your phone or camera must join.
- Devices do not always switch smoothly between the main router and the repeater.
The most common mistake is putting a repeater in the exact place where the Wi-Fi has already disappeared. It needs to be placed partway towards the garden, while it can still receive a good signal from the router.
A basic repeater can still be a reasonable low-cost option for one camera. Just be prepared for a little more setup and a connection that may not be as smooth as the rest of your home Wi-Fi.
It's worth being clear about where an extender should actually go: not at the dead spot itself, but somewhere it can still pick up a decent signal from the router while also being closer to where you need coverage. An extender can only repeat what it receives — it can't manufacture a good connection out of a signal that's already unusable.

Mesh Wi-Fi is usually the easiest solution
For most homes, a mesh Wi-Fi system is the simplest and most reliable way to improve coverage. A mesh system uses two or more Wi-Fi points around the house. They work together as one network, using the same Wi-Fi name and password.
Your phone and other devices can connect to whichever point gives them the best signal. This is normally much easier than managing a separate network created by a basic repeater.
Where should the extra mesh point go?
Do not put it at the far end of the garden where there is no signal. Start with a point inside the house, roughly halfway between your main router and the garden. A garden-facing room, hallway, or rear window area often works well.
The mesh point needs a good connection back to the main router. If the mesh app reports a weak connection, move the point closer to the router and test again.
Mesh tends to work particularly well where the house already has patchy coverage near the garden-facing side, since it improves indoor coverage at the same time as extending it outward — placement still matters, though. A mesh point positioned near a rear wall or window, rather than buried in the middle of the house, will generally do more for garden coverage.
Don't put a standard indoor mesh node outside unless it's specifically built and rated for outdoor installation — most aren't. Some mesh systems do offer a purpose-made outdoor unit as part of the range, which is worth checking for if you need coverage right out in the garden rather than just near the house. Mesh is a strong, low-effort option for many gardens, but it isn't automatically better than a wired connection — for a detached building or a really large garden, Ethernet or a dedicated outdoor access point is usually more dependable.
What about an outdoor Wi-Fi access point?
For a larger garden, or anywhere with several outdoor cameras or devices, a proper outdoor-rated access point can be one of the most effective options. Mounted on the outside of the house, it avoids forcing the signal through multiple internal and external walls in the first place, rather than trying to compensate for the loss afterwards.
Outdoor access points are normally connected back to your router over Ethernet, and many run on Power over Ethernet (PoE), so a single cable can carry both the network connection and power to the unit — useful when running a separate mains supply outdoors isn't practical. Whatever unit you choose, make sure it's genuinely weatherproof and IP-rated for outdoor use — don't be tempted to mount an ordinary indoor access point outside.

For the strongest connection, use a cable
If you need Wi-Fi in a garden office, large outbuilding, or at the far end of a long garden, an Ethernet cable connected to a separate access point is the most reliable option. It takes more work to install than mesh Wi-Fi, but it avoids relying on a wireless signal passing through several outside walls.
For an ordinary garden or a bird box near the house, try the router-position and mesh options first. They are usually much easier and do not require running a cable outdoors.
In practice this simply means: router, an Ethernet cable, then an access point, small switch, or Wi-Fi access point at the other end — in the garden office, shed or outbuilding itself. Use cable that's actually suitable for the installation: standard indoor patch cable isn't intended for burial or permanent outdoor exposure, so if the cable needs to run outside or between buildings, use an outdoor-rated cable and get it installed properly. Running cables between separate buildings can involve more than simply laying a patch cable across the garden, so if you're not confident with the installation — particularly anything involving trenching, ducting, or work near mains electrics — it's worth getting a qualified installer to do that part.
Can I use a powerline adapter to get Wi-Fi into a shed or garden office?
Powerline adapters send your network signal over your home's existing mains electrical wiring, which can be a genuinely convenient option if a shed or garden office already has mains power run to it. Plug one adapter in near your router, run the connection over the electrical circuit, and plug the other adapter in at the far end — some kits include a built-in Wi-Fi access point at that end, giving you a fresh Wi-Fi signal right where you need it.
Performance varies a lot, though, because it depends on your electrical installation rather than on distance in the way Wi-Fi does. Different circuits, consumer units, RCDs, and general electrical noise on the wiring can all affect it — sometimes it works extremely well, sometimes surprisingly poorly, even over what looks like a short run. It's genuinely worth testing a powerline kit (most retailers allow returns) rather than assuming a fixed speed or range, and it isn't something we'd guarantee will work between any two given buildings.
How do I get Wi-Fi to a distant shed or outbuilding?
Where a building is too far from the house for extenders or mesh to cope, and running a cable isn't practical, a point-to-point wireless bridge is worth considering. In simple terms: at the house, your router connects over Ethernet to an outdoor bridge unit; that unit sends a dedicated wireless link across the garden to a matching bridge at the outbuilding, which then connects to an access point, switch, or camera at that end.

This works best where there's a reasonably clear line of sight between the two buildings, and it's generally designed for exactly this kind of longer link — often more reliable than trying to stretch ordinary indoor Wi-Fi that far. It's typically more involved to set up than mesh or a simple extender, so it tends to suit farms, larger gardens, and outbuildings that need a proper permanent connection rather than a quick fix.
What can reduce Wi-Fi range into the garden?
A number of things can eat into your signal before it even reaches the garden. Common culprits include:
- Brick or blockwork walls
- Reinforced concrete
- Foil-backed insulation
- Metal doors and frames
- Some coated or low-E glazing
- Large appliances (fridges, washing machines and similar)
- Water tanks and fish tanks
- Multiple walls or floors between router and device
- Straightforward distance
- Dense vegetation, particularly once a connection is already marginal
A camera might only be 10 metres from your router in a straight line, but two dense exterior walls in that path can cause more signal loss than a much longer, clear line-of-sight run outdoors.
Improving Wi-Fi for a bird box or wildlife camera
If the whole point of better garden Wi-Fi is getting a reliable picture from a bird box or wildlife camera, a few extra steps are worth taking before you fix anything permanently in place:
- Set the camera up indoors near the router first.
- Confirm the camera and app work properly before mounting it.
- Take a phone to the planned installation position and test the Wi-Fi there.
- Test with doors and windows in their normal closed positions.
- Remember that a camera mounted outdoors may need to transmit through an exterior wall.
- If you're using an extender or mesh node, place it between the router and the camera, not beside the camera.
- Reliable video streaming needs a stable connection, not just a network name that appears occasionally.
- If the connection is marginal, improve the network before permanently fixing the camera in place.
- For larger gardens or several cameras, consider an outdoor access point or a wired solution.

A simple order to try

Frequently asked questions
There's no fixed distance, because range depends on your router's transmit power and antenna design, the frequency band in use, interference from other networks, and — most significantly — what the signal has to pass through. A signal travelling across open air can reach much further than the same signal trying to pass through two or three exterior walls. Rather than relying on a stated maximum range, it's far more reliable to test the actual signal at the spot where you plan to use it.

Somewhere it still receives a strong, usable signal from your router — not at the point where the signal has already died out.
