Where Should a Camera Be Positioned Inside a Bird Box?

For most small bird boxes, position the camera high inside the box and aim it down towards the area where the nest will form — but there's no universal measurement. Position by the live picture, not a fixed number copied from someone else's box, and allow for the nest and chicks growing well above the empty floor.

For most small bird boxes, the best starting position is high inside the box, with the camera looking down towards the area where the nest will eventually form.

The important word is eventually.

An empty nest box can be misleading. If you simply point the camera at the centre of the bare wooden floor, the picture may look perfect during installation — but once birds build a substantial nest, your subject can end up much closer to the lens and considerably higher in the frame.

The best camera position therefore needs to take account of:

  • the future nest
  • the camera lens
  • focus distance
  • field of view
  • the entrance hole
  • night-vision reflections
  • available nesting space

There isn't one magic measurement that works for every box.

The easiest way to position a camera properly is to use the actual live picture while the box is still empty.

Quick answer

Where should the camera go? High inside the bird box, normally angled down towards the future nest area.

Should it point straight down? Not necessarily. A slightly angled view often gives more useful depth and context.

Should I centre the entrance hole? No. The nest is the main subject, not the entrance.

How high above the nest should it be? There is no universal measurement. Use the live view and allow for the nest becoming much higher than the empty floor.

When should I adjust it? Before active nesting begins.

What is the best starting position?

Start with the camera high in the box, looking diagonally down towards the centre of the likely nest area.

For many conventional small nest boxes this means mounting the camera:

  • close to the roof
  • towards a side, corner or rear area
  • looking downwards
  • with as little hardware as practical protruding into the nesting space

The camera does not have to be perfectly centred. In fact, an offset position often gives a better view.

The aim is to see the nest clearly without:

  • filling the picture with one wall
  • pointing mainly at the entrance
  • placing the camera too close to the future nest
  • occupying useful nesting space

Use this as a starting point rather than a rigid rule.

Think about the nest, not the empty floor

One of the most common positioning mistakes is framing the empty floor perfectly and forgetting that birds are going to build on top of it.

A finished nest can substantially change the effective height of the subject. That means:

Camera installed above bare floor → nest is built → eggs/chicks are much closer to camera

That means if the camera starts too low, you may end up with:

  • chicks filling the whole frame
  • parts of the nest disappearing from view
  • focus problems
  • less usable field of view

When positioning the camera, mentally raise the future nest area above the wooden floor. Better still, simulate it.

How can I simulate the future nest while positioning the camera?

Place a temporary object in the box at approximately the height where you expect the nest surface to be.

You could use:

  • folded cloth
  • scrunched paper
  • a shallow container
  • wood shavings
  • another harmless temporary object

This is only a positioning aid while the bird box is empty. Do not leave unsuitable artificial nest material in the box simply for the camera.

The purpose is to give the camera something to focus/frame at a more realistic height. Then:

  1. close the box
  2. view the camera
  3. adjust position
  4. check focus
  5. check night vision

Remove your test object once finished.

How high should a bird box camera be?

There is no single correct height.

A useful rule is: mount the camera as high as practical while still achieving the view and focus you need.

Mounting high has several advantages:

  • more distance between camera and nest
  • wider useful view
  • less intrusion into nesting space
  • reduced chance of nest material reaching the camera
  • more flexibility as chicks grow

But "higher" is not automatically better if:

  • the camera becomes obstructed
  • the lens cannot focus correctly
  • the box roof prevents the required angle
  • the mounting bracket creates a blind spot

Use the actual camera image to decide. Don't rely on an exact universal number such as "always mount the camera 150mm above the floor" — that may be completely wrong for another box.

Should the camera point straight down?

Not necessarily. A moderately angled view often gives a more useful picture than pointing the lens vertically at the floor.

A straight-down view can show the nest well, but it gives little depth.

An angled view may also show:

  • adult birds standing at the nest
  • chicks raising their heads
  • some of the entrance area
  • more natural depth/perspective

The best angle depends on the lens and box. Prioritise:

  1. clear view of the nest
  2. useful focus
  3. minimal blind spots
  4. enough context to understand what is happening

Don't chase photographic perfection — this is a wildlife-monitoring camera.

Should I point the camera at the entrance hole?

The entrance hole should normally be secondary to the nest.

It can be useful to see birds arriving and departing, but most of the interesting activity occurs in the nest itself.

A poor setup might give you a perfect view of the entrance, but half the nest outside the frame.

A better setup normally gives a clear view of the nest, perhaps part of the entrance, and useful context around the box.

Don't sacrifice the nest view just to centre the hole.

Why can the entrance hole cause problems?

The entrance can introduce a large area of bright daylight into an otherwise dark box.

If the camera looks directly at it, this may create:

  • strong contrast
  • underexposure of the darker nest
  • changing exposure as birds enter
  • glare
  • distracting bright areas

This doesn't mean the entrance must be completely outside the frame — simply avoid making it the dominant part of the picture. A slightly offset camera position can often help.

Which corner of the bird box should the camera go in?

There is no universal "correct corner".

Choose the side/corner that gives the best combination of:

  • nest coverage
  • cable routing
  • clear entrance
  • mounting space
  • focus
  • low IR reflection

For some boxes, a rear corner works well. For others, mounting nearer one side produces a better view.

Test it before drilling final mounting holes.

How much of the nest should fill the picture?

Aim for the nest area to occupy most of the useful frame without filling it completely. Leave some spare framing.

Remember:

  • the nest will grow
  • chicks will grow
  • adult birds are larger than eggs
  • birds will stand upright
  • fledglings can become surprisingly large before leaving

If a tiny simulated nest already fills the entire image during installation, the camera is probably too close. Give yourself some room.

How does field of view affect camera position?

The wider the lens, the more of the bird box it can see from a short distance.

This is why wide-angle lenses are particularly useful inside nest boxes.

A narrow lens may require more distance from the nest and more careful positioning. A wide-angle lens lets you see more from a compact enclosure.

However, very wide lenses can distort objects around the edges — that is normal. Prioritise coverage rather than trying to eliminate all lens distortion.

How important is focus distance?

Very important, because the nest may be much closer to the camera than subjects in normal security-camera use.

A camera can have excellent resolution but still produce a poor picture if the subject is outside its useful focus range. This is another reason generic camera specifications such as "5MP HD" do not tell you whether a camera is suitable inside a bird box — resolution does not fix incorrect focus.

For any camera:

  • position it
  • place a temporary target at the expected nest distance
  • check actual image sharpness

Do this before nesting.

Fixed focus vs adjustable focus

Some cameras use a fixed-focus lens optimised for their intended working distance. Others allow manual focus adjustment.

How should I focus an adjustable bird box camera?

Focus the camera at approximately the distance where the nest and birds will actually be, rather than focusing on the entrance hole or far wall.

While the box is empty:

  1. place a temporary textured target at approximate nest height
  2. open the live view
  3. adjust focus
  4. check detail on the target
  5. remove the target
  6. close the box
  7. re-check in night mode

Useful targets include something with printed text, fine texture, or visible edges.

Don't wait until birds have nested before discovering that the camera is focused on the wrong surface.

What happens if the camera is too close to the nest?

Potential problems include:

  • very narrow usable view
  • parts of birds outside frame
  • poor focus
  • chicks dominating the picture as they grow
  • infrared overexposure
  • more chance of contamination/webs reaching the lens
  • camera taking up nesting space

If your image looks great with an empty floor but a simulated future nest almost touches the lens, reconsider the position.

What happens if the camera is too far away?

In a typical small nest box this is less common, but in larger enclosures a camera can be too far from the subject.

Possible effects: the nest occupies only a small part of the picture, with less detail and unused wall/roof dominating the frame.

This is particularly relevant when adapting a camera for owl boxes, larger nesting boxes, hedgehog houses or custom wildlife enclosures — an adjustable-focus camera can be useful in these situations.

Camera position and infrared night vision

Position affects night vision as well as the daytime picture.

Infrared light can reflect strongly from objects immediately beside the lens. A camera may look perfectly positioned in daylight but produce a poor image when IR activates.

Potential sources of IR glare include:

  • nearby pale walls
  • mounting brackets
  • cable
  • shiny screws
  • entrance-hole edges
  • plastic surfaces
  • cobwebs

This is why the final position must be tested with the box closed.

Why is one side of my night image completely white?

The camera may be too close to a surface which is reflecting infrared straight back into the lens.

If this happens while the bird box is empty:

  • move the camera slightly
  • alter its angle
  • move cable/bracket out of the IR path
  • check for reflective fixings
  • close the box and test again

A very small change can sometimes dramatically improve the night picture.

Why is my nest dark but the wall is bright?

This is another common IR/exposure issue. The camera may be exposing for a nearby wall reflecting large amounts of infrared.

Try to frame the camera so that the nest is the main subject, nearby walls don't dominate the foreground, and bright reflective objects aren't close to the lens.

Do this before nesting starts.

Position the mounting bracket carefully

The camera bracket should support the camera without becoming part of the picture.

Avoid:

  • large bracket arms across the frame
  • reflective screws immediately beside the lens
  • fixing hardware hanging into the nesting area
  • sharp screw tips
  • a bracket that can rotate after installation

Use the mounting option that best suits the particular box — no specific bracket must always be used.

Keep the cable out of the picture and nesting space

Route the cable high against the wall or roof rather than leaving it hanging into the box.

Loose cable can appear in the camera image, reflect infrared, reduce nesting space, and potentially create an unwanted loop/obstruction.

Plan cable routing at the same time as camera positioning — don't decide camera position first and then discover the cable has nowhere sensible to go.

How to Install a Camera in a Bird Box

Should the camera be hidden from the birds?

You do not need to construct an elaborate concealment system around a purpose-suitable camera.

The more important objectives are: compact installation, no unnecessary protrusions, appropriate lights/sounds, secure mounting, and completing installation before nesting.

Across hundreds of real nest-box installations, the recurring lesson is to keep the camera high, secure and simple, frame the future nest rather than the empty floor, test everything beforehand and then leave the box alone once birds begin nesting.

There is no one exact Zopkins-approved measurement for every bird box — this is practical experience, not a marketing statistic.

How should I test the camera position?

Before drilling the final mounting holes:

  1. Place the camera temporarily in the proposed location.
  2. Open the live view.
  3. Put a temporary object at approximate future nest height.
  4. Check how much of the frame it occupies.
  5. Check the entrance hole does not dominate.
  6. Check walls/brackets are not dominating the picture.
  7. Check focus.
  8. Check cable routing.
  9. Close the bird box fully.
  10. Wait for infrared night mode.
  11. Check for IR glare/reflections.
  12. Re-open the empty box and make any adjustments.
  13. Repeat until happy.
  14. Permanently secure the camera.
  15. Check one final time after tightening everything.

Then stop adjusting it once birds begin nesting.

A simple test: imagine the chicks are much bigger

Before finalising the picture, imagine the nest is higher and several nearly fledged chicks are standing in it. Ask yourself: will they still fit in the frame? Is the camera likely to remain focused? Is there enough distance? Will the camera/bracket be in their space?

The view needs to work at the end of the nesting cycle, not only on day one.

Common camera-positioning mistakes

1. Framing the empty floor

The nest will raise the subject considerably.

2. Mounting the camera too low

This reduces field of view and usable nesting space.

3. Pointing mainly at the entrance

The nest is normally the more important subject.

4. Putting the lens too close to a wall

This can create IR glare and waste part of the image.

5. Focusing on the entrance rather than the nest

Focus on the distance you actually want to watch.

6. Filling the entire frame during installation

Remember that both the nest and chicks will grow.

7. Testing only with the box open

Night vision can reveal completely different positioning problems.

8. Leaving the mounting bracket in the picture

Check the final live view after tightening everything.

9. Letting the cable hang down

Keep it high and secured.

10. Adjusting the camera after nesting has begun
