Your computer may still communicate with another computer, a printer, a NAS, or a local CCTV recorder, even though websites no longer load.

That is a local network operating without internet access. A compatible bird box camera can work in the same way.

What happens if my broadband goes down?

A broadband outage does not necessarily mean the local Wi-Fi network has stopped working.

Once initially set up, local Wi-Fi operation can continue without the internet.

What you lose during an internet outage is access that depends on reaching the camera from outside the local network — at home on Wi-Fi, viewing is potentially still available; away from home using mobile data, it isn't available until the camera's internet connection returns.

What happens if the router loses power?

This is different from losing broadband.

If the Wi-Fi router/access point itself switches off, the local Wi-Fi network disappears.

The camera may still remain powered and potentially continue local recording depending on model/configuration, but you cannot communicate with it over a Wi-Fi network that no longer exists.

Broadband failure is not the same thing as Wi-Fi/router failure — that distinction is worth keeping in mind when troubleshooting.

We won't give detailed network-security configuration instructions here, and we wouldn't claim this guarantees the camera never attempts outbound connections. The supported claim is simply that local operation does not require the internet — that's the distinction that matters for technical accuracy.

What about privacy?

Some customers prefer a camera which can still be used locally without relying on a working internet connection. That can reduce dependency on external connectivity for normal local viewing.

However, we wouldn't say "completely private", "no cloud", "nothing ever leaves your network" or "cannot communicate externally" unless those claims were technically verified, and they aren't.

The legitimate benefit is: local viewing remains possible without active internet access.

Do I need internet to record onto an SD card?

Recording to a microSD card occurs at the camera, so local recording does not inherently require video to be uploaded across the internet.

However, exact behaviour can depend on model, configuration, whether recording has already been enabled, camera firmware, and app/cloud dependencies. We haven't independently verified exact recording behaviour for either model specifically during an internet outage, so if you're planning to run a camera permanently without internet, it's worth confirming the recording configuration for your particular model with us first rather than us guaranteeing it here.

Do motion alerts work without internet?

This may depend on the push-notification service, app platform, vendor infrastructure, and whether the phone is on the same network — we haven't verified this precisely for either model.

Local camera operation and internet-based push notifications are separate features. A camera may continue operating/recording locally while a cloud-delivered phone notification requires internet access.

We wouldn't promise offline push notifications without testing that specifically.

Can I view the camera while I'm away from home?

Yes, provided the camera's network has internet access and the particular model is correctly configured for remote viewing.

Both current Zopkins Wi-Fi bird box camera ranges support viewing from away from home when internet is available — from work, on holiday, from another property, or over mobile data.

The home side must still have camera power, router/Wi-Fi and internet access. Your phone must also have internet access.

Does faster broadband improve bird box camera quality?

Usually not in the way people expect.

If you are watching locally, the connection between camera, Wi-Fi network and phone matters more than the speed of your broadband package.

For remote viewing, your internet connection becomes relevant. But upgrading from very fast broadband to even faster broadband will not fix weak garden Wi-Fi, thick external walls, poor router positioning, interference, or a camera at the edge of coverage.

Does a bird box camera use much internet bandwidth?

Live video uses data while it is being viewed remotely, but exact usage depends on resolution, bitrate, compression and how long you watch — we won't invent an arbitrary GB/month estimate here.

Local viewing within the home network does not need to send that video across the broadband internet connection merely to travel from one local device to another, where true local operation is being used.

Does the camera need 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz Wi-Fi?

Yes. A Wi-Fi extender can help when positioned correctly.

The most common mistake is putting the extender at the dead spot. It needs to sit somewhere that still receives a decent connection from the main router while extending that connection towards the bird box.

Options can include improving existing Wi-Fi coverage, mesh, a Wi-Fi extender, an outdoor access point, Ethernet plus an access point, or another appropriate network design.

Camera works when I'm at home but not when I'm away

Likely a remote/internet path problem rather than basic local Wi-Fi. Check home internet, remote phone internet, and the camera's remote-access status.

Camera doesn't work locally or remotely

Possible causes: camera power, router/Wi-Fi, camera disconnected, or a configuration issue.

Phone says "Wi-Fi connected, no internet"

This does not automatically mean the local network is broken. If your camera supports local operation, local viewing may still work.

Camera works beside router but not at the bird box

Broadband is down but the Wi-Fi symbol is still showing

This is normal. Your phone is connected to the router locally, but the router cannot currently reach the internet. Local-compatible services may continue working.
