A compatible network bird box camera can be streamed live to services such as YouTube by sending its local video feed to a computer running streaming software such as OBS Studio.
The camera does not normally upload directly to YouTube in this workflow. Instead:
- The BBCAM221PRO provides a live camera feed on the local network.
- A computer receives that feed.
- OBS Studio acts as the encoder.
- OBS sends the stream to YouTube or another supported platform.
- YouTube distributes it to viewers.
For the most reliable permanent setup, we'd recommend wiring the router/switch and the OBS computer together with Ethernet wherever practical — the camera itself connects over Wi-Fi (more on that below).
Once configured, this can turn a normal garden nest-box camera into a private family live stream, an unlisted stream for friends, a school wildlife project, a community live cam, a public YouTube nest stream, or a live camera embedded on a website.
The important point is that the camera provides the video feed, while OBS and the computer handle the online broadcast.

What equipment do I need?
For the recommended setup:

- a router/network switch, ideally with spare Ethernet ports
- a PC capable of running OBS, wired to the network where practical
- a stable internet connection
- OBS Studio
- a YouTube channel or another supported streaming platform
- a suitable camera power supply
OBS Studio is free and open-source — download it only from the official obsproject.com, not a third-party mirror or bundled installer.
Ethernet vs Wi-Fi for live streaming
We haven't found wired Ethernet listed as a feature of the BBCAM221PRO itself — the current product listing describes it as a Wi-Fi camera, with no network cable or RJ45 connector mentioned. So in this guide, the camera's own connection to your network is Wi-Fi.
That doesn't mean wired networking has no role to play, though. For a camera expected to stream continuously for hours, days or potentially much of a nesting season, we'd recommend wiring the router/switch and the OBS PC together with Ethernet wherever practical.
A brief Wi-Fi interruption that may hardly be noticed when occasionally checking the camera through an app can be much more obvious on a permanent public stream. Possible symptoms include:
- a frozen picture
- OBS losing the camera source
- reconnect delay
- stream interruption
- occasional dropped frames
Wiring the OBS PC (and the network between the router and the rest of your setup) removes one link in the chain from wireless variability — more predictable bandwidth, no garden Wi-Fi signal variation on that link, less susceptibility to interference, and fewer wireless reconnects.
For maximum reliability, use Ethernet for the parts of the network you can — the router, switch and OBS PC — even though the camera itself connects over Wi-Fi.
Is Wi-Fi still suitable?
Yes. For the BBCAM221PRO's own network connection, Wi-Fi is the normal and expected method.
It remains particularly important to get right when the camera will be streaming continuously, so:
- test at the final camera location
- make sure the signal is stable, not just present
- test over an extended period, not just a quick check
- avoid relying only on a phone showing "full bars"
Does Ethernet improve picture quality?
Not inherently.
Camera image quality is mainly determined by the sensor, lens, resolution, bitrate, compression and focus.
A stable wired network's main advantage is a more predictable transport path — it can reduce interruptions and freezes caused by local network problems, but a poor-quality source doesn't become HD simply because part of the journey is over Ethernet.
Does the camera need Ethernet to power it?
No — this doesn't apply to the BBCAM221PRO. Since the camera connects over Wi-Fi rather than a network cable, Power over Ethernet (PoE) isn't relevant to the camera itself. It uses its normal power supply, same as any other Zopkins bird box camera.
If you do wire other parts of your network (router, switch, OBS PC) with Ethernet, that's purely for data — it doesn't power anything beyond what a standard network switch or PoE-injector would normally handle for that specific piece of equipment.

The BBCAM221PRO is the camera we'd recommend for this type of project.

For a dedicated PC/OBS live-stream setup, we'd recommend the BBCAM221PRO because its PC and ONVIF support make it much more suitable for this type of integration.
That's not a claim that the BBCAM202 definitely can't be streamed — we simply haven't verified OBS/ONVIF/public live-stream workflows for it. It remains an excellent, simpler option for straightforward phone/tablet bird-box viewing.
Step 1: Install and configure the camera normally
Before configuring YouTube:
- Set up BBCAM221PRO.
- Connect it to your local Wi-Fi network.
- Confirm local viewing works.
- Position the camera.
- Set focus.
- Test night vision.
- Test audio.
- Confirm reliable network operation.
Do all physical installation before active nesting.

For a permanent stream, solve local network reliability before configuring YouTube.
Where practical: wire the router/switch and the OBS PC together with Ethernet.
If Wi-Fi is used anywhere in the chain (which, for the camera itself, it will be): test the exact camera position, close doors/windows normally, test over a meaningful period, and make sure the signal doesn't fluctuate badly or repeatedly reconnect.
A public live stream is only as reliable as its weakest connection.
Step 3: Give the camera a predictable IP address
For a permanent network-video setup, the camera should ideally remain on a predictable local IP address.
The preferred approach is a DHCP reservation in your router: the camera receives normal network configuration, but the router gives it the same address every time, so OBS doesn't suddenly point at the wrong or non-existent address after a router restart or DHCP change.
This isn't a full subnetting tutorial — your router's own documentation will show you how to set a DHCP reservation for a specific device.
Step 4: Get the camera's network video feed
We haven't verified the exact BBCAM221PRO RTSP path, ONVIF port, authentication method, or whether separate main/substream profiles exist, so we won't publish a specific stream URL or connection string here — doing so without confirming it against real hardware risks giving you something that simply doesn't work, or worse, copying a generic CamHi URL that happens to be wrong for this model.
What we can say: the BBCAM221PRO is ONVIF compatible, which is a standard many NVR and network-video tools use to discover and connect to compatible cameras. Never publish a real stream URL, username, password or stream key anywhere public — treat them the same way you'd treat a password.
What is ONVIF?
ONVIF is a standard used by many IP cameras and video systems to help compatible equipment discover and work with network cameras.
It can be useful when connecting BBCAM221PRO to an NVR, CCTV software, or compatible network-video tools.
However, ONVIF itself is not the service that broadcasts your camera to YouTube — the live-stream workflow is still camera/network video → OBS → YouTube.
What is RTSP?
RTSP is a common method for delivering a live IP-camera video stream across a network. OBS or another application can use this stream as a source where supported.
We haven't confirmed whether or how the BBCAM221PRO exposes an RTSP stream, so check current documentation or ask us before assuming a particular path works.
Whatever method you end up using, don't expose that stream to the public internet — keep it on your local network.
Step 5: Install OBS Studio
OBS Studio is free, open-source software used for recording and live streaming video. Download it only from the official site: obsproject.com.
Basic process:
- Install OBS Studio.
- Run the initial configuration wizard if offered.
- Create a scene.
- Add the camera feed as a source.
- Confirm video.
- Confirm audio if supported.
- Configure YouTube as the destination.
Step 6: Add BBCAM221PRO to OBS
OBS supports several ways of bringing in a network video source, such as a Media Source or a VLC Video Source, depending on what the camera actually provides. We haven't verified which method currently works for the BBCAM221PRO, so we won't tell you to "add an ONVIF source" unless that's genuinely how your version of OBS handles it.
Once you have a working, verified network-stream address for your camera, the general process is: create a scene, add the appropriate source type, enter the camera's network-stream address, authenticate where required, confirm the picture, confirm audio, and resize/crop as needed.
Step 7: Set up the OBS scene
Keep it simple. A recommended layout is:
- the camera image filling most or all of the canvas
- optional subtle text (e.g. "Blue Tit Nest Box", "Incubating", "Chicks hatched")
- an optional small logo
Don't clutter the image, and don't display your exact address, network information, camera IP, usernames or stream keys on screen. The birds should remain the focus.
Audio
Natural nest-box audio can make a live stream much more engaging.
If the BBCAM221PRO network stream includes audio and OBS receives it, include it — but verify this rather than assuming that because the phone app has audio, the network stream necessarily does too.
Possible issues: the source has no audio, audio is disabled, the wrong stream profile is selected, the volume is too high or low, or there's hum/noise.
Avoid unnecessary background music — natural nest sound is the relevant content, and copyrighted music has no place in a public stream.
Also be aware the microphone may pick up sound from outside the box too — test privately before broadcasting publicly.
Step 9: Enable YouTube Live
Use current official YouTube help documentation for this step, since the Live Control Room interface and requirements change over time. The general process is:
- Sign into YouTube.
- Open YouTube Studio.
- Choose live streaming.
- Enable live streaming if it isn't already.
- Configure your stream details.
- Connect OBS.
- Test the stream.
- Set it to public, unlisted or private as required.
Some accounts need to activate live streaming for the first time, and YouTube's own documentation should be checked for current activation requirements and timing rather than relying on an older tutorial.
Step 10: Connect OBS to YouTube
Depending on the current supported method, this may be direct account integration, or a stream key that YouTube supplies for OBS to send the stream to.
Treat the stream key like a password. Never publish it, screenshot it, commit it anywhere, or post it on forums. If it's ever exposed, regenerate it.
Step 11: Test privately before going public
Don't make your first test a public wildlife stream — use private or unlisted while you're testing.
Test the picture, focus, crop, audio, night vision, network stability, OBS CPU load, upload speed, stream reconnect behaviour, and PC sleep/restart behaviour. Test for long enough to catch intermittent issues, not just a five-minute check.
Once birds are nesting, don't open the box just because the online crop is slightly imperfect.
Internet speed requirements
Upload speed is the important broadband figure when you're broadcasting.
We won't publish a single universal number here — use current YouTube encoder recommendations for specific bitrate/upload guidance, and leave headroom above whatever bitrate OBS is sending.
Reliability matters more than headline speed — a connection measuring 100 Mbps upload but periodically dropping out can be worse for streaming than a slower but stable connection.
Camera Ethernet does not replace internet
Even where you do use Ethernet on parts of the network, that only helps the local path — OBS still needs internet to reach YouTube. These are genuinely separate parts of the connection:
Local path: Camera → Wi-Fi/LAN → OBS
Internet path: OBS → broadband → YouTube
This distinction is useful for troubleshooting, covered later on this page.
Does local camera video use broadband bandwidth?
The camera-to-OBS connection stays on the local network — it doesn't need to leave the property. The internet upload only begins once OBS sends the stream on to YouTube.
Does a Bird Box Camera Need Wi-Fi or Internet?Can I stream without leaving a PC running?
Not with the normal OBS-PC architecture described here — the PC is the encoder.
If the PC shuts down, sleeps, reboots, closes OBS, or loses network, the YouTube stream stops.
More advanced options exist, such as a dedicated mini PC, a hardware encoder, or a server/NVR streaming gateway, but those are outside this beginner guide — you don't need expensive extra hardware to get started.
Prevent the streaming PC from sleeping
For long-running streams: disable automatic sleep while streaming, keep the laptop/PC powered, consider lid-close behaviour, keep ventilation clear, monitor OS updates/restarts, and avoid running unnecessary applications alongside OBS.
Don't permanently disable security updates — schedule updates and reboots rather than switching them off forever.
Should the OBS PC also use Ethernet?
Where practical, yes, for a permanent stream — it removes one more link from the wireless side of the chain.
But a camera on Wi-Fi with an OBS PC on Ethernet can still work well, and vice versa if you do end up with a wired camera in future. The recommendation is simply: use wired connections wherever practical for anything intended to run unattended for long periods.
Should I run the stream 24/7?
You can, but you don't necessarily need to.
Options include 24/7, daytime only, periods of known activity, or key nesting stages.
Consider computer power, internet upload, overnight IR video, encoder stability, automatic recovery and platform behaviour — a 24/7 live stream is effectively a small continuously running service, so set your expectations accordingly.
Recording vs live streaming
Local recording and public streaming solve different problems.
Local SD recording keeps working even when nobody is watching, stores recent footage in the camera, needs no paid cloud-storage recording subscription, and is useful for reviewing missed events.
A live stream broadcasts current footage online, needs internet, needs OBS/an encoder in this setup, and lets many viewers watch at once.
You may be able to use both at once, but we haven't verified simultaneous SD recording and live network streaming on the BBCAM221PRO, so we won't promise it works without checking your specific setup.

Yes. Depending on current YouTube options, a live stream can typically be private, unlisted or public.
Private/unlisted suits family, friends, schools or testing. Public suits a wildlife audience, community projects, or a public website live cam.

Can I embed the bird box stream on my website?
Yes. A hosted service such as YouTube can distribute the stream and provide an embeddable player.
Camera → OBS → YouTube → Embedded YouTube player → Website visitors
This is significantly better than trying to make website visitors connect directly to the camera. If 500 people watch through YouTube, OBS only sends one stream to YouTube, and YouTube distributes it from there — your home connection doesn't need to send 500 individual camera streams.
Do not expose the bird box camera directly to the public internet
This is an important security point: don't port-forward the camera, expose a public RTSP or ONVIF port, expose the camera's web interface publicly, or leave default passwords in place.
Camera → private local LAN → OBS → outbound connection → YouTube
Viewers should connect to YouTube — not directly to your bird box camera.
Use a strong, unique camera password, keep camera access local/private, apply firmware updates where appropriate, avoid unnecessary inbound port forwarding, and protect your stream key.
Do I need port forwarding?
No, for the normal OBS-to-YouTube setup described here.
OBS accesses the camera locally, then makes an outbound connection to YouTube. You don't need to expose RTSP, ONVIF, or the camera's web interface to the internet simply to broadcast a live stream.
Can viewers access or control my camera?
Not when the recommended architecture is used correctly.
YouTube viewers receive the video from YouTube — they don't receive the camera IP, camera password, ONVIF credentials, or direct access.
How much delay will there be?
There will normally be some delay compared with local camera viewing.
Latency comes from camera encoding, local buffering, OBS, internet upload, YouTube processing and viewer buffering.
YouTube provides different latency modes, but for a wildlife stream, stability is usually more important than ultra-low latency — there's rarely a reason viewers need sub-second interaction with a nesting bird.
What stream quality should I use?
Use a resolution and bitrate that the camera, computer and broadband connection can sustain reliably.
Consider the actual source resolution and bitrate, your PC's encoder capacity, your broadband upload, and the quality you intend viewers to receive. Don't upscale unnecessarily — a 1080p camera feed doesn't gain detail by encoding it as 4K.

What happens at night?
The online stream can continue when the bird box camera switches into infrared night vision.
Viewers may see a colour image during the day and a black-and-white infrared image once the box is dark — this is normal.
