Seeing the first egg appear in a Blue Tit nest box is exciting — but it can also be alarming when the female then leaves and seems to ignore it.
In most cases, this is completely normal.
Blue Tits normally build their clutch gradually, with the female laying approximately one egg per day. She does not normally begin sustained incubation when the first egg appears.
According to BTO guidance, a female Blue Tit typically begins incubating around a day before the clutch is complete.
So it is perfectly possible to see:
One egg → female leaves. Two eggs → female away for long periods. Three, four or more eggs → still no continuous sitting.
before the nest suddenly changes into a much more obvious incubation routine.
Once incubation is properly under way, she will spend much more time on the eggs — but she will still leave periodically to feed.
The key question is therefore not simply:
“Why isn’t she sitting?”
It is:
“Has she finished laying yet, and has sustained incubation actually begun?”
This guide explains what you may see at each stage.
Two different stages — don't judge them the same way
Camera owners worrying about eggs are often actually looking at one of two quite different situations.

These two stages should not be judged by the same standard. An egg left uncovered while more eggs are still appearing is a very different picture from an established incubation routine suddenly stopping altogether.

This is illustrative, not a promise. Not every female lays at exactly the same time each day, and not every clutch reaches the same size.
The key lesson is that the laying period itself can last for more than a week, because a typical clutch contains multiple eggs. That is why incubation strategy matters.
Why doesn't she incubate the first egg immediately?
If a Blue Tit began full incubation as soon as the first egg was laid, that first embryo would have a substantial developmental head start over eggs laid many days later.
BTO explains more generally that starting incubation near the end of the laying sequence allows the clutch to hatch relatively synchronously. For Blue Tits specifically, the female typically begins incubation close to completion of the clutch.
So not sitting continuously on the first few eggs is part of the normal breeding strategy, rather than evidence that she has forgotten about them. Not every egg necessarily hatches at exactly the same moment, so this shouldn't be read as a promise of perfect synchrony — just a general pattern.
Don't count incubation from the first egg
Many camera owners make this mistake:
First egg: 1 May → assumption: “14 days later = hatch day”
This is not the best way to calculate it. The more meaningful point is: when did sustained incubation begin?

Incubation duration is counted from the start of incubation, not simply from the date the first egg appeared.
How do I know sustained incubation has started?
Before full incubation, you may see:
- the female visiting briefly
- an egg being laid, then she leaves
- eggs left unattended for substantial periods
- continuing building/lining activity
- occasional sitting without remaining for long periods
Once incubation begins, you may notice:
- the female staying in the box much longer
- long periods settled over the eggs
- repeated shorter departures rather than long periods with little nest attendance
- characteristic sitting/settling behaviour
- the male occasionally bringing food where visible
There is no exact percentage-of-the-hour threshold that reliably marks the switch. Look for a clear overall change in behaviour rather than an arbitrary formula.
Why does she sometimes sit before the clutch is complete?
The change from laying to full incubation isn't necessarily an instant on/off switch. BTO's guidance notes that the female typically begins incubation around a day before laying is complete, so you may see increasing periods of sitting before the very last egg appears.
Don't assume that if she's sitting there are definitely no more eggs coming — another egg may still be laid.
Is she incubating if she only sits at night?
Don't diagnose full incubation simply because she spends one long period sitting. Instead, look at the overall pattern over the morning, daytime, evening and subsequent days.
Sustained incubation should become much more obvious as the clutch nears completion.
Why does she leave the eggs during incubation?
Because the female still needs to feed herself.
Incubation is a balance between keeping the eggs warm and maintaining the female's own condition. BTO specifically notes that an incubating female Blue Tit still needs to leave the box during the day to feed, even though the male may also bring her food.
So female sitting, leaving, and returning later can be completely normal. Don't assume that once incubation starts she should never leave — that would be biologically incorrect.
Does the male feed the female?
He may. BTO documents courtship feeding and notes that males can provide food to females during the breeding cycle. During incubation, camera users may see the male arrive, pass food to the female, and leave — sometimes at the entrance, sometimes inside the box, depending on the birds and the box.
Not every male performs this behaviour at the same frequency.
Why does she still leave if the male feeds her?
Because male feeding does not necessarily provide all the female's nutritional needs. BTO's guidance notes that the female still needs to leave the nest to feed herself.
Seeing her leave does not mean the male has stopped looking after her, or that the clutch has been abandoned.
Does the male Blue Tit incubate the eggs?
Normally, no. BTO identifies the female as the incubating sex for Blue Tits.
The male's roles can include:
- feeding the female
- territory-related behaviour
- later feeding the chicks
So don't expect a female shift followed by a male shift followed by a female shift, as happens in some other bird species.

The useful answer is: 8–10 is typical, not compulsory.
Why are the eggs covered or hidden under nesting material?
Peer-reviewed research on tits and chickadees (the Paridae family, which includes Blue Tits) documents egg-covering behaviour during the laying phase, where the female may cover the clutch with loose nest material such as hair, feathers, moss or other light lining material before leaving the nest.
This behaviour is described in the scientific literature as widespread across parid species, though it varies considerably between individuals and populations. Researchers have proposed several possible functions — including reducing the risk of the cavity being taken over by another species, and thermal or predator-related effects — but these remain proposed hypotheses rather than one single, settled explanation.
If your Blue Tit appears to bury or cover the eggs with nest lining while she is still laying, this can be normal behaviour. Don’t uncover them yourself.
We won't claim she is definitely covering them to keep them warm — the evidence doesn't support singling out one proven reason. Don't move the material away just to get a better camera picture.
Why can't I see all the eggs?
Several possible explanations: camera angle, a deep nest cup, eggs partly covered by lining, or the female sitting over them.
Don't move nest material, reach inside, or rearrange eggs to get an exact count. Following BTO's own nest-monitoring practice, an approximate camera count — such as "at least 6" — is perfectly usable without needing a perfect total.
Are the eggs getting too cold?
During the laying stage, Blue Tit eggs are naturally left for periods before sustained incubation begins. That is part of the species' normal breeding sequence.
So an egg being unattended before the clutch is complete should not be treated like an incubated egg that has been accidentally left cold. Don't add heating, use hand warmers, add extra bedding, warm the eggs manually, or handle them to check temperature. Birds have evolved their own laying and incubation strategy — let the female manage the clutch.
Can I tell from the camera whether an egg is warm?
There's no useful need to try. Don't use thermal probes, touch shells, insert thermometers, or modify the camera position simply to assess incubation — use behavioural observation instead.
How long can she leave the eggs?
There is no useful universal number of minutes that tells a camera owner whether a normal incubation recess has become abandonment.
Don't treat 15 minutes, 30 minutes, one hour or two hours as a universal safety threshold. Relevant factors include:
- whether full incubation has begun
- weather
- the individual bird
- time of day
- feeding conditions
BTO confirms that females leave the nest to feed during incubation, so a temporary absence does not automatically mean abandonment. If the bird has disappeared for an unusually extended period, the pattern over time becomes more relevant than a stopwatch.
She has been gone longer than usual — should I worry?
Work through this in stages.
Is she still laying? If yes, longer periods away can be normal before sustained incubation.
Has sustained incubation clearly begun? If yes, a major change from a previously consistent incubation pattern is more noteworthy, but still doesn’t justify immediate interference.
Has the camera actually been recording? Check live view, recording history, timestamps and motion events before concluding she hasn’t returned.
Before assuming abandonment, review the recordings
A user checks the live feed at 08:00 (empty), 12:30 (empty) and 17:00 (empty), and concludes she hasn't been back all day.
But the recordings might actually show:
09:12: female enters · 11:47: male visit · 14:06: female sits · 16:20: female returns
Live-view spot checks are poor evidence of total absence. If recording is available, review the complete recent activity — this is exactly where a bird box camera is much more useful than simply looking through the entrance hole.
What if motion alerts show nothing?
No push notification does not necessarily equal no bird activity.
Possible technical issues include:
- alerts disabled
- phone notification permissions
- motion sensitivity settings
- an internet issue
- camera configuration
Before declaring a nest abandoned, verify recording/activity independently.
Bird Box Camera TroubleshootingHow do I know whether the eggs are abandoned?
Abandonment is a pattern, not a single camera screenshot.
Potentially concerning context could include:
- a previously incubating female no longer returning
- no activity over an extended observation period
- no evidence in recordings
- a major break from an established incubation routine
But there is no universal timer that proves abandonment. Don't state that after a fixed number of hours the eggs are abandoned, and don't use that feeling as a reason for physical intervention.
If genuinely concerned: observe, preserve recordings, avoid interference, and seek appropriate wildlife guidance.
One parent has disappeared
If the male hasn't been seen but the female continues incubating, the eggs have not automatically been abandoned. Likewise, the male is not expected to sit on the eggs in place of the female.
We won't speculate about whether an unseen bird has died, been predated, or abandoned its mate without evidence.
What if the female really doesn't come back?
Sadly, nesting attempts sometimes fail in the wild.
If a female genuinely disappears during incubation, there may be no practical action a householder should take themselves. Don't incubate wild eggs indoors, use a heat lamp, take them into the house, hand-rear them, move them into another nest, or buy an incubator.
Wild bird eggs are legally protected. If appropriate, an established wildlife organisation is the right place to go for further advice — we aren't a wildlife rescue service.
What not to do
If the eggs look unattended, don't:
- touch them to see if they're warm
- pick them up
- turn them
- move them
- uncover them
- add heat
- add extra bedding
- relocate the nest
- install new equipment
- repeatedly open the box
- attempt artificial incubation
- assume they're abandoned after a fixed number of hours
Instead, observe the pattern over time.
Legal note: don't take or move the eggs
In England, Scotland and Wales, wild bird nests and eggs are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Subject to specific exceptions, it is an offence to intentionally take, damage or destroy the nest of any wild bird while it is in use or being built, and to intentionally take or destroy the egg of any wild bird.
Northern Ireland has its own broadly equivalent legislation, the Wildlife (Northern Ireland) Order 1985, which similarly protects wild bird nests and eggs.
Don't take eggs indoors, discard them, move them, incubate them artificially, or collect an apparently abandoned egg simply because the parent hasn't been seen recently.
Should I open the bird box to check?
If you already have a working camera, there is usually little reason to repeatedly open the box merely to find out whether the female is incubating.
The camera can show egg laying, whether the female returns, the duration and pattern of her sitting, male visits, and progression into incubation — without physically accessing the nest.
Observe first, rather than opening first.

Don't touch the shells, lift the eggs, turn them, count them by hand, or check their temperature by touch.
A camera-equipped nest gives you no good reason to do this out of curiosity — keep interference to a minimum.

The correct time to configure the physical camera is before active nesting.

What does incubation look like on camera?
Once sustained incubation begins, you may see:
- the female sitting low in the nest cup
- long quiet periods
- occasional repositioning
- brief departures
- returning and settling quickly
- possible male feeding visits
The camera view may actually become less action-packed than nest building — that's normal.
Incubation can be one of the least visually dramatic stages of the nest — which is usually exactly what you want to see.
Why does she keep turning/moving on the eggs?
Normal incubation behaviour can include adjusting position, repositioning eggs, rearranging nest material, and settling her body against the clutch. We won't make exact claims about turns per hour or required angles, since we don't have solid sourcing on those specifics.
What is the brood patch?
BTO describes the female developing a brood patch during the breeding season — an area on the abdomen with reduced feathers and a rich blood supply that improves heat transfer to the eggs.
This is why the female physically sitting on the eggs matters for incubation, rather than simply being nearby.
Why does she look flattened into the nest?
During incubation, the female may settle low over the clutch to bring the brood patch into contact with the eggs. This can look very different from standing, nest building, or a brief inspection — though not every low posture is necessarily incubation without other context.
When will they hatch?

If you can't identify the exact start day, give a hatch window rather than a precise date.

Could we estimate hatch day from camera recordings?
Yes — approximately. This is a genuine bird-box-camera benefit. You can review recordings and look for the behavioural transition from egg laying and long absences to sustained sitting — that provides a more meaningful incubation-start estimate than simply using the date of the first egg.
Why haven't the eggs hatched on day 14?
13–14 days is typical, not a hard deadline. BTO records show natural incubation durations extending beyond that.
It's also possible the incubation start was estimated incorrectly, or that not every egg hatches, or that eggs hatch over a period rather than simultaneously. Don't intervene on day 14 simply because the calendar says so.
Do all eggs hatch together?
They often hatch relatively close together because sustained incubation starts near the end of laying. But this isn't necessarily exactly the same time — some eggs may hatch later, and some may not hatch at all.
Why isn't she sitting after one egg?
Because she is probably still in the laying stage. A typical Blue Tit clutch contains many eggs and the female normally adds approximately one per day. Full incubation usually starts near the end of that process.
Why isn't she sitting after three or four eggs?
The same principle applies. If she is still laying her clutch, periods away from the eggs can remain normal.
Don't use the number of eggs alone to decide whether incubation should have started — instead, look for whether more eggs continue appearing, the overall sitting pattern, and behaviour over several days.
She's sitting constantly but another egg appeared
That can be normal. BTO notes that female Blue Tits can begin incubation around a day before the clutch is complete, so incubation may begin and a final egg may still follow. Don't treat this as unusual.
The female left just after I looked at the camera
The remote camera itself does not necessarily cause the departure. If nobody physically approached the box, her leaving shortly after you opened the phone app doesn't mean she knows you're watching.
The camera's viewing app doesn't ordinarily require the bird to behave differently simply because the owner opened live view. We'd only make specific claims about camera clicks, speaker audio or status LEDs based on verified hardware behaviour.
Why is she off the eggs early in the morning?
BTO's nest-box guidance notes that an early visit to a nest may find an incubating bird away feeding. A morning absence is not automatically abnormal — don't build a rigid daily timetable around it.

Incubation is a stage where recordings are particularly useful.
A live viewer may think she's been gone all afternoon, but recorded events can reveal brief returns. Recordings can also help identify when sustained incubation began, male feeding visits, and the eventual hatching period.
