Blue Tit Nesting Timeline: From Nest Building to Fledging

Once Blue Tits start using a nest box, the typical sequence is nest building, egg laying (about one egg per day), incubation (around 13–14 days, beginning close to clutch completion), hatching, chick growth and fledging (around 18–21 days after hatching). Exact dates vary considerably by weather, location and year — these are typical ranges, not deadlines.

Once Blue Tits start using a camera-equipped nest box, the entire nesting cycle can unfold surprisingly quickly.

You may go from watching a female carry in pieces of moss to seeing a full clutch of eggs, newly hatched chicks and eventually a crowded box of almost fully feathered youngsters in only a matter of weeks.

A typical sequence is:

Nest-site inspection → nest building → egg laying → incubation → hatching → chick growth → fledging

But the exact dates vary considerably.

According to BTO nest-record data, the average first-clutch laying date for UK Blue Tits is around 26 April, but recorded first clutches span from mid-April into May.

A typical clutch contains 8–10 eggs, incubation usually lasts around 13–14 days, and the chicks normally remain in the nest for about 18–21 days after hatching.

The really useful timeline, therefore, starts with what you can actually see happening inside your own box. This guide explains what is likely to happen next.

Blue Tit nesting timeline at a glance

  1. Nest-site inspection — often begins weeks before serious nest building.
  2. Nest building — often around 1–2 weeks, but can be faster or more stop/start.

These are typical timings, not deadlines. Individual nests vary.

Stage 1: Choosing the nest box

Blue Tits may investigate a nest box well before they begin building a nest.

Camera owners may see birds:

  • entering briefly
  • looking around
  • pecking at surfaces
  • repeatedly visiting
  • appearing for a few days and then disappearing again

This does not mean nesting is guaranteed. Birds may inspect multiple possible cavities before choosing one.

A bird appearing in February or March does not necessarily mean eggs are imminent — BTO's seasonal guidance notes that pair formation and site selection can begin in late winter, well ahead of actual nest construction. This is one reason bird box cameras are interesting even before nest building starts.

Why does a Blue Tit keep looking inside but not build?

Inspecting a nest box and choosing it for nesting are not the same thing.

A bird may:

  • inspect several sites
  • return repeatedly
  • disappear for days
  • eventually choose another cavity
  • come back later

Don't repeatedly alter the box because a bird hasn't immediately started building. Once the installation is suitable, leave it alone and let the birds decide.

Stage 2: Nest building

The female Blue Tit normally does most or all of the nest building.

The first material is often moss and other relatively coarse vegetation. Later, the nest cup may be lined with softer materials such as:

  • feathers
  • fur
  • wool
  • fine fibres

On camera, nest construction can be surprisingly entertaining. You may see the female:

  • arrive carrying material larger than herself
  • push moss around with her body
  • shuffle and turn inside the nest
  • repeatedly reshape the cup
  • remove material she previously brought in

Nest building is not a neat, linear construction project — it can look messy and repetitive, and that is normal.

How long does nest building take?

Often around one to two weeks, although some Blue Tit nests are completed much faster and others progress in stops and starts, according to current BTO guidance. Neither one week nor two weeks should be treated as a fixed rule.

Why has my Blue Tit stopped building the nest?

A pause in nest building does not automatically mean the nest has been abandoned.

Birds may:

  • build intensively one day and do very little the next
  • spend time feeding elsewhere
  • respond to poor weather
  • still be deciding between sites

If the bird was recently active, don't immediately remove the nest, open the box, rearrange material, or assume failure. Observation is generally more useful than intervention.

What does a finished Blue Tit nest look like?

Typical Blue Tit nest structure includes:

  • a mossy base
  • a defined central nest cup
  • a softer lining
  • feathers, hair or fur, which may appear woven through the lining

Individual nests vary considerably. Don't add artificial nesting material to try to "finish" the nest — let the birds construct it themselves.

Stage 3: Egg laying

Once laying begins, the female normally produces approximately one egg per day, often first thing in the morning.

This is one of the most fascinating stages to observe by camera. A typical clutch is 8–10 eggs, but BTO records demonstrate substantial natural variation — recorded clutches range from as few as 2 to as many as 16 eggs.

Six eggs does not automatically mean something is wrong. Twelve eggs does not automatically mean something is wrong either. Not every clutch should be expected to land exactly on 8–10.

What do Blue Tit eggs look like?

Typical Blue Tit eggs are small, white or pale, with reddish-brown speckling, and measure approximately 16 x 12mm according to BTO data.

Why is the female covering the eggs?

Some camera users may notice nest material partly obscuring the clutch while laying continues. This is a normal-looking behaviour, but we're being deliberately cautious here rather than asserting a single definitive reason, since it isn't something we've been able to pin to a specific, clearly-sourced explanation.

Why is there one egg but the bird isn't sitting on it?

Because Blue Tits do not normally begin full incubation as soon as the first egg appears. The female typically lays one egg per day, and serious incubation begins close to completion of the clutch.

This helps the chicks hatch within a relatively short period of each other rather than the first chick being many days older than the last.

So it can be completely normal to see one egg, two eggs, or several eggs, with the female spending substantial time away from the nest. Don't jump to "the eggs have been abandoned."

Why Isn't My Blue Tit Sitting on Her Eggs?

Won't the early eggs get cold?

Before full incubation starts, the eggs are not developing in the same way as during sustained incubation. The laying-then-incubation strategy used by Blue Tits allows the clutch to develop and hatch relatively synchronously, rather than each egg developing from the moment it's laid.

Don't warm the eggs, touch them, add insulation, or place any heat source inside the box — this is a normal part of the natural cycle, not a problem to fix.

Stage 4: Incubation

Once the clutch is nearly complete, the female begins spending much more time sitting tightly on the eggs.

Typical Blue Tit incubation lasts 13–14 days, though the BTO's recorded range is broader. The female performs the incubation herself.

The male may bring her food, although she also leaves the nest to feed herself. Camera owners may therefore see:

  • long periods of sitting
  • brief departures
  • egg turning or repositioning
  • the male feeding the female
  • the female leaving the nest to feed

A temporarily empty nest does not automatically mean abandonment.

Why does the female keep moving around on the eggs?

Possible normal behaviours include turning or repositioning the eggs, adjusting the nest, settling her feathers, or simply changing body position. It's best not to over-interpret every small movement.

Why does the female leave the eggs?

The incubating female still needs to feed and carry out normal activities away from the nest. Brief periods away can be entirely normal.

There is no reliable rule along the lines of "if she is gone for exactly X minutes, the nest is abandoned." Weather, the stage of nesting and individual behaviour all matter, and overly rigid advice on this topic circulating online can do more harm than good.

Does the male incubate the eggs?

In Blue Tits, incubation is primarily carried out by the female — this is confirmed by BTO guidance. The male's role is usually to supply food, defend the territory, and later help feed the chicks.

Don't expect both adults to take equal incubation shifts, as happens in some other species.

When should the eggs hatch?

Typically around 13–14 days after sustained incubation begins — not necessarily 13–14 days after the first egg was laid. That distinction matters:

Day 1: first egg → several days later: clutch nearly/fully complete → full incubation begins → approximately 13–14 days later: expected hatch window

Don't calculate a hatch date simply by adding 14 days to the date the first egg appeared.

Do all Blue Tit eggs hatch on the same day?

Because serious incubation begins around completion of the clutch, Blue Tit chicks often hatch relatively close together. However, not every egg necessarily hatches at exactly the same time, and there can be some natural variation — and some eggs may not hatch at all.

Don't attempt to intervene with an apparently unhatched egg based on this alone.

Stage 5: Hatching

Newly hatched Blue Tit chicks look dramatically different from the nearly fledged birds you will see only a few weeks later.

At hatching they are:

  • extremely small
  • largely naked
  • eyes closed
  • completely dependent on their parents
  • unable to regulate their own temperature effectively

The female therefore spends substantial periods brooding the chicks, especially while they are tiny. This can look very similar to incubation on camera.

Can I actually see a chick hatch on camera?

Potentially, yes. A correctly positioned camera may capture the shell cracking, a chick emerging, a parent removing shell fragments, or the first feeding.

But hatching can be easy to miss, and not every camera setup will provide a clear close-up view of the exact moment.

What happens to the eggshells?

Parents may remove eggshell material from the nest after hatching. This can explain why a camera user sees a parent leave the box carrying a pale or white object shortly after hatching begins — we won't overstate the exact disposal behaviour beyond that general pattern.

Stage 6: Days 1–5 after hatching

These age bands are illustrative, not rigid developmental deadlines — every nest develops at its own pace.

Typical camera observations in the first few days:

  • eyes closed
  • very little feathering
  • chicks huddling together
  • exaggerated open mouths when a parent arrives
  • frequent brooding by the female
  • increasing feeding visits

The exact rate of development varies. Don't handle or inspect chicks to try to determine their age.

Why does the female sit on the chicks after they have hatched?

Very young chicks cannot regulate their own body temperature effectively, so the female continues brooding them for warmth. This is normal.

As the chicks grow and become better feathered, the amount of brooding generally changes — but there's no fixed day when brooding "must" stop.

Stage 7: Days 6–10

Rough things you may notice during this period (not a strict day-by-day schedule):

  • chicks growing rapidly
  • eyes opening and developing
  • feather tracts becoming visible
  • pin feathers developing
  • increasingly vigorous begging
  • more obvious competition for food
  • frequent adult feeding visits

What are the strange spikes on the chicks?

Developing feathers initially emerge inside protective sheaths, producing the characteristic spiky appearance — BTO's Blue Tit diary specifically describes chicks at this stage as being "in pin." It's a very normal (and very good camera-observation) stage.

Stage 8: Days 11–15

The nest may now look radically different from a week earlier. Typical visible changes:

  • much more feather coverage
  • noticeably larger chicks
  • a crowded nest cup
  • vigorous begging
  • repeated adult feeding trips
  • more movement around the nest

Treat these as general observations rather than exact milestones.

Why are the chicks constantly opening their mouths?

Gaping is the begging response chicks use to solicit food from their parents. Camera owners may see multiple bright mouths appear as soon as a parent enters, movement occurs, or the box is disturbed by sound or vibration.

Frequent gaping doesn't by itself mean the chicks are starving — it's normal nestling behaviour.

What are the parents carrying out of the nest?

A common thing camera owners notice is an adult entering with food and then leaving carrying a pale or white package.

These are often faecal sacs. Young nestlings produce faeces enclosed in a membrane, which allows the adults to physically remove waste from the nest — BTO's Blue Tit breeding diary specifically describes this behaviour.

This helps keep the nest relatively clean, and it's fascinating rather than a sign that something is wrong with a chick.

Stage 9: Days 16–21

In the final days before fledging, the chicks can suddenly look almost too large for the box. Camera users may notice:

  • nearly complete juvenile feathering
  • a very crowded nest
  • wing stretching and flapping
  • increased movement
  • chicks approaching the entrance
  • more awareness of activity outside
  • parents continuing to feed

Don't interpret every wing flap as a sign that fledging is imminent.

Why are they flapping their wings inside the box?

Wing stretching and flapping are a normal part of development as fledging approaches.

It isn't accurate to say the chicks will definitely fledge within 24 hours of first seeing this — it can be a sign that fledging is getting closer, without pinning it to an exact countdown.

Stage 10: Fledging

Blue Tit chicks typically leave the nest around 18–21 days after hatching — a typical BTO figure, not a failure deadline if a nest runs a little later.

Fledging may happen over a relatively short period, with chicks leaving one after another rather than necessarily all at once.

Parents may call from outside the box and encourage the young to leave. A camera positioned partly towards the entrance may catch this.

Do chicks ever return to the nest after fledging?

We haven't found sufficiently solid, species-specific sourcing to state definitively whether Blue Tit fledglings routinely return to sleep in the box after leaving, so we'll avoid a firm claim either way here.

The important point is this: an apparently empty box immediately after fledging does not mean the chicks have been abandoned — fledging means they have moved into the next stage of life outside the nest.

What happens after fledging?

Leaving the nest is not the end of parental care. Blue Tit fledglings remain dependent on their parents for a period after leaving the box.

Parents continue to:

  • feed them
  • lead them around suitable habitat
  • help them through the transition to independent feeding

You may still see adults and fledglings around the garden for some time afterwards. Don't try to bring healthy-looking fledglings back into the box.

The box is suddenly empty — did something take them?

If the chicks were well feathered and approximately fledging age, a suddenly empty box may simply mean they fledged while you weren't watching.

This is where recorded footage becomes particularly valuable — you may be able to review the timeline and actually find the fledging event.

Why does the timeline vary from year to year?

Blue Tit breeding is timed to environmental conditions rather than a fixed human calendar. Relevant factors include:

  • spring temperature
  • food availability
  • caterpillar abundance
  • latitude
  • weather
  • individual bird condition

Blue Tits are strongly associated with timing chick demand around seasonal caterpillar availability, a relationship well documented in BTO and wider ornithological research. It's an oversimplification, though, to reduce this to "warm weather always means earlier eggs" — several factors interact.

Why are my Blue Tits earlier/later than somebody else's?

Possible reasons include:

  • UK location
  • local microclimate
  • the individual pair
  • local food availability
  • nest-site conditions
  • year-to-year weather

So comparing "my friend in Kent already has chicks and mine in Yorkshire only has eggs" does not by itself indicate a problem.

Are Great Tit timings the same?

Not identical. BTO notes that Great Tits often breed somewhat earlier than Blue Tits, while incubation and nestling durations are broadly similar.

If you're not certain which species is nesting in your box, don't assume every tit species follows the exact Blue Tit timeline above.

What is normal to see on camera?

Potentially normal behaviours include:

  • nest building stopping and starting
  • the female spending long periods away before full incubation
  • one egg appearing per day
  • eggs apparently uncovered before incubation begins
  • the female leaving during incubation to feed
  • the male feeding the female
  • the female sitting on tiny chicks
  • chicks begging aggressively
  • parents repeatedly entering and leaving
  • parents carrying faecal sacs out of the nest
  • chicks becoming extremely crowded in the box
  • wing flapping before fledging
  • an apparently sudden empty nest after fledging

This list is meant to reduce unnecessary alarm about normal behaviour — it isn't a guarantee that every occurrence is always harmless.

What should make me cautious rather than immediately intervene?

Examples that might warrant more caution include:

  • unusually prolonged absence of both adults
  • chicks appearing persistently weak or unresponsive
  • an obvious injury
  • the nest being physically damaged
  • a predator incident
  • a dead chick

Wild nests can have difficult outcomes, and apparent problems should not automatically lead to handling eggs or chicks, or opening the box out of curiosity.

If you're genuinely concerned:

  • observe from the camera or from a distance
  • avoid disturbing the nest
  • seek advice from an appropriate current UK wildlife authority or rescue organisation where necessary

Why hasn't an egg hatched?

Not every egg in a clutch necessarily hatches, and hatching may not occur simultaneously across the whole clutch.

Don't remove, crack open, candle or otherwise handle an egg simply because it appears later than the others, and avoid rigid deadlines for this.

If the other chicks are healthy and the parents are behaving normally, observation is usually better than interference.

One chick is much smaller than the others

Possible causes may include slightly later hatching or normal individual variation and competitive differences between chicks.

It isn't possible to reliably diagnose a chick's health through a camera, and hand-feeding wild nestlings isn't something we'd advise. If there's a genuine welfare concern, seek appropriate current wildlife advice.

A chick has died in the nest

Sadly, not every wild nest is fully successful, and individual chicks can die.

We won't set out a detailed removal procedure here — check current appropriate UK wildlife guidance before considering opening an active nest for this reason. Parents may continue caring for the remaining chicks as normal.

The parents haven't returned

A period without seeing an adult on camera does not automatically mean the nest has been abandoned.

Adults leave the nest to feed, collect food, defend territory, and carry out other normal activities.

Observation over time, and the actual stage of nesting, matter more than a fixed number of minutes. There's no reliable rule such as "if they're gone for exactly 60 minutes, intervene" — avoid intervention based on arbitrary timings.

Don't open the box to check the timeline

One of the main benefits of having a bird box camera is that you can observe the nest without repeatedly opening it.

If the camera already shows eggs, incubation, chicks or feeding, there is generally little reason to open the box simply to:

  • count eggs more accurately
  • measure the chicks
  • check whether an egg is warm
  • inspect feather development
  • take photos

Use the camera instead.
