🐦 Meet the Blue Tit Nest Builders
If you’re watching this live stream, you’re getting a front-row seat to one of the UK’s busiest little builders: the Blue Tit.
These tiny, colourful birds might look delicate, but when it comes to nesting season, they’re incredibly hardworking (and surprisingly stubborn!).
🏡 How Blue Tits Build Their Nests
Blue tits usually start nesting in early spring (March–April).
The female does most of the construction, creating a soft, well-insulated nest inside a cavity — which is why bird boxes are so popular with them.
She builds in layers:
- 🌿 Base: moss, leaves, and grass
- 🧶 Middle: fine fibres and hair
- 🪶 Top: feathers to keep the eggs warm
The result is a cosy little cup — perfect for protecting eggs and chicks from chilly spring nights.
🥚 Eggs & Chicks
Once the nest is ready:
- The female lays 6–12 tiny white eggs with red speckles
- She incubates them for about 2 weeks
- After hatching, both parents work nonstop feeding the chicks
And when we say nonstop… we mean it:
👉 A pair of blue tits can make hundreds of feeding trips per day
🍽️ What Are They Bringing Back?
Mostly:
- Caterpillars 🐛 (a favourite!)
- Small insects and spiders
This high-protein diet helps the chicks grow incredibly fast — they’ll be ready to leave the nest in just 2–3 weeks.
👀 What to Watch For on the Stream
- Nest building (lots of in-and-out activity)
- The female settling low into the nest (incubating eggs)
- Rapid feeding visits once chicks hatch
- Tiny beaks appearing as chicks beg for food!
💡 Fun Fact
Blue tits often return to the same nesting area each year, especially if they’ve successfully raised chicks there before — so your bird box could become a regular family home!
Enjoy the show — nature’s happening live, right in front of you 🐦💙
